The Swedish nationella proven (national tests) are approaching rapidly. It's big, like really big. I guess you can imagine. This years theme is The possibilities of language and we can basically write about whatever we want to, as long as it's relevant to the topic. So I decided to write about the English dominance over the other languages around the world.
The problem is, I don't know where to start! Sure, there are pros and cons on every subject, this one's no exception. If everyone spoke English we'd all understand each other, and that would be great! But won't the other languages decline if English receives the spotlight in elementary school? What will happen to each countries national identity?
So everyone, debate. Should the world convert into an English spoken one, or should each country preserve its own language and culture? Share your opinion! This is me, trying my hardest to find the answer!
separate languages. some studies show that knowing two languages increases brain function.
SvaraRaderaI think Spanish should be the only language, hahaha jk, there are about 15-20 different types of Spanish so that wouldn't really work. The more languages someone knows the better, so English should't be it. I'm going for 3, already know English and Spanish, Japanese is next.
SvaraRaderaJapanese is too hard for me, but learning English and French.
SvaraRaderadifferent languages means different understands of the world. for example the innuits have about 20 words for different kinds of snow.
SvaraRaderaso i think there should be different languages, because the way you percieve your reality (which is mainly based by your surroundings) influences the way you speak. if every culture were to decide on one language i dont think there would be so much diversity in descriptions for things that arent absolutely equal but likewise.
language is a part of culture, if there'd be only one dominant language the whole world would be worse off. there already are many languages that are dying out and it's a pity.
SvaraRaderajust like when an animal goes extinct, it goes away forever, and that's just sad for something so important to human nature.
well I think it shouldn't be only.. but definitely should be primary... it would be easier ..
SvaraRaderadefinitely not, for many cultures language is how they preserve their cultural history.
SvaraRaderadont touch my cultural heretage :)
SvaraRaderait's makes it convenient for me, but it seems like English is the worldwide standard for business?
SvaraRaderaYeap, English is the leading language when it comes to business, but now I mean not only that level but also the personal one. What would happen if the family started to speak English instead of their mother language?
SvaraRaderaI think Japanese wins the contest for prettiest language, so we should all learn japanese. Just my $.02
SvaraRaderai like the english language very much but i wouldn't go as far as saying it should be "the one and only" language^^
SvaraRaderaeach language has its own dialects. English is an international language, and everyone needs to know it. However, a language is where your history and culture and food as well as religious believes come from.
SvaraRaderaIdeally english would be the only language, it's already widely taught in many countries across the world. But I agree we'd see too much of a decline in other languages. Plus I don't think people are just ready for it yet. awesome blog, you got a new follower.
SvaraRaderadont be foolish
SvaraRaderaye english should be
SvaraRaderaEnglish should be tbh!
SvaraRaderaIt would be nice if there were one language, but I think its a little late.
SvaraRaderaI'm in favor of multiple languages and preservation of culture. English is, by far, not incredibly crafty or intriguing. I prefer Chinese. It's so artsy.
SvaraRaderaI'm an English Major in college right now, and well, personally I think it'd be awesome if everyone spoke English, i realize that it's an impracticality. Languages will always exist. they're a function of culture, but they also create culture in turn. It's truly remarkable, the impact languages have.
